Ultrasound & Electrical Stimulation

Ultrasound and electrical stimulation are supportive treatments we may use to help manage pain, calm irritated tissue, and make movement and exercise more comfortable.

Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves applied through a small handheld device and gel over the skin. Electrical stimulation uses gentle electrical signals delivered through adhesive pads.

Our therapists use ultrasound and electrical stimulation in a controlled clinical setting with clear goals: reduce pain, improve tolerance to movement, and help you participate more fully in your rehab exercises.

Ultrasound and electrical stimulation are often one part of a wider treatment plan. Your therapist decides if either option fits based on your exam, your symptoms, and what helps you progress.

Because some medical conditions, implanted devices, and skin sensitivity can affect what is safe, we review your medical history and explain what you should feel before treatment begins.

Why Get Ultrasound / Electrical Stimulation?

Ultrasound and electrical stimulation can help lower pain and sensitivity so you can move better and stay consistent with rehab.

When pain is high, people often brace, avoid movement, and stop doing helpful exercises. A comfort-focused treatment can make it easier to start moving again, tolerate strengthening, and build confidence in the affected area.

Ultrasound and electrical stimulation can be especially useful if you:

Is Ultrasound / Electrical Stimulation Right for Me?

In your first session at Revitalize Physical Therapy, our qualified therapists will review your medical history, assess your symptoms, and then advise whether ultrasound, electrical stimulation, or another option fits your needs.

These treatments can help if you:

  • Have pain that limits your ability to move or exercise.
  • Have soft-tissue irritation that needs symptom relief to tolerate loading.
  • Have reduced muscle activation that affects stability or movement control.
  • Need short-term support while you build long-term strength and function.
  • Prefer a supportive option alongside hands-on care and exercise.

We may hold off or avoid ultrasound or electrical stimulation if you:

  • Have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, or other implanted electrical device.
  • Are pregnant or have a medical condition where these treatments are not recommended.
  • Have very sensitive skin, open wounds, infection, or reduced sensation in the area.

What Is Ultrasound / Electrical Stimulation Like?

A session should feel comfortable and controlled, not painful. Most people describe ultrasound as warm or mildly soothing. Electrical stimulation often feels like a light tingling, tapping, or gentle pulsing.

At Revitalize Physical Therapy, your therapist first explains the goal of the treatment and checks your skin and sensation. You stay dressed in loose clothing, and we only uncover the area being treated.

For ultrasound, your therapist applies gel and moves the applicator slowly over the target area. You tell us if it feels too warm or uncomfortable, and we adjust right away.

For electrical stimulation, your therapist places pads on the skin and gradually increases intensity to a tolerable level. If the goal is pain relief, it should feel comfortable. If the goal includes muscle activation, you may see or feel a gentle muscle contraction, and we keep it controlled.

We often follow these treatments with mobility drills or strengthening so you use the symptom relief right away. That helps you move better and build progress in the same visit.

After a session, many people feel less pain or less tightness for a period of time. We will guide you on what to do next so the benefit supports your rehab work.

Results & Benefits of Ultrasound & Electrical Stimulation

Many patients feel a decrease in pain or a looser feeling in the treated area after a session. When pain drops, even modestly, walking, stairs, and daily movement often feel more comfortable.

Electrical stimulation can also help improve awareness and activation of certain muscles. Better activation can make it easier to practice strengthening with improved control and less compensation.

These treatments can support recovery by helping you stay consistent. When symptoms feel more manageable, it becomes easier to do the exercise and movement work that drives long-term change.

Ultrasound and electrical stimulation work best as support, not a standalone fix. They are often one part of a wider plan that may include therapeutic exercise, mobility work, hands-on care, and gait or balance training based on your exam.
