Kinesiology Taping
Kinesiology taping is a supportive technique we use to help manage pain, improve comfort with movement, and support irritated tissue during activity.
Kinesiology tape is a flexible, elastic tape that we apply to the skin in specific patterns. The tape moves with you and can provide gentle support and sensory feedback, which may help you feel more stable and less guarded during motion.
Our therapists use kinesiology taping in a controlled clinical setting with clear goals: reduce discomfort, improve movement confidence, and support better mechanics while you work on strength, mobility, and return to activity.
Kinesiology taping is often one part of a wider treatment plan. Your therapist decides if taping fits based on your exam, your symptoms, and what helps you move better day to day.
Because some people react to adhesive or have sensitive skin, we review your medical history, check your skin, and explain what to watch for before you leave with tape on.

Why Get Kinesiology Taping?
Kinesiology taping can help you feel more supported so you can move more freely, stay active, and keep progressing in rehab.
When an area feels irritated, weak, or unstable, you may change how you move without noticing. That can lead to more strain, more pain, and slower progress. Taping can give gentle feedback that helps you move with better control and less hesitation, especially during daily tasks.
Kinesiology taping can be especially useful if you:
- Feel pain or irritation during walking, stairs, or standing.
- Feel unstable or “off” in a joint during activity.
- Need support between visits while you stay active.
- Want a low-drug option to reduce discomfort during movement.
- Respond well to hands-on care and want extra support during exercise.
Is Kinesiology Taping Right for Me?
In your first session at Revitalize Physical Therapy, our qualified therapists will review your medical history, assess the area, and then advise whether taping is a good option for you.
Kinesiology taping can help if you:
- Have mild to moderate pain that changes how you move.
Feel like a joint needs support during activity or exercise. - Have swelling or irritation that benefits from gentle support.
- Need help tolerating strengthening or return-to-activity drills.
- Want short-term support while you build long-term strength and control.
We may hold off or avoid taping if you:
- Have very sensitive skin, eczema, open wounds, or an active rash in the area.
- Have a known tape or adhesive allergy.
- Have fragile skin or a medical history that makes skin injury more likely.
What Is Kinesiology Taping Like?
Kinesiology taping should feel light and supportive, not tight or restrictive. Most people describe it as “barely noticeable,” with a sense of improved awareness or support during movement.
At Revitalize Physical Therapy, your therapist first checks your skin and explains what the tape is meant to do. We clean and dry the area, then apply tape in specific directions and tension based on your needs. You stay dressed in loose clothing, and we only uncover the area we are treating.
Once the tape is on, we have you move right away. We check comfort, range of motion, and how the support feels during walking, squatting, or other tasks. If it feels too tight, itchy, or uncomfortable, we adjust or remove it.
The tape can usually stay on for a few days, depending on your skin and activity. We will explain how to keep it on, how to remove it safely, and what signs mean you should take it off sooner.
Results & Benefits of Kinesiology Taping
Many patients feel a quick improvement in comfort or confidence with movement. Walking, stairs, and exercise often feel easier when the taped area feels more supported.
Pain relief is often modest but useful. Even a small drop in pain can help you move more normally, sleep better, and follow your rehab plan with less hesitation.
Taping can also help you stay active between visits. That matters because consistent movement and strengthening usually drive long-term change.
Kinesiology taping works best as support, not a standalone fix. It is often one part of a wider plan that may include strengthening, mobility work, balance training, and hands-on care based on your exam.
Common Questions about Kinesiology Taping
Most people keep kinesiology tape on for about 2 to 5 days. The exact time depends on your skin sensitivity, how active you are, and how well the tape stays stuck. If the edges peel a lot or your skin feels irritated, remove it sooner.
Yes. You can usually shower and exercise with it on. Pat the tape dry after bathing instead of rubbing it. If heavy sweating or friction makes it peel, your therapist can show you ways to improve wear time.
No. Taping can support comfort and movement, but lasting improvement usually comes from the right strengthening and mobility plan. Taping is often one part of a wider treatment plan, and your therapist uses it to help you tolerate exercise and move with better control.
No. Kinesiology tape is flexible and moves with you. Athletic tape is usually stiff and is used to limit motion and give firmer support. Your therapist will choose the type that fits your goal and your activity.
Remove it. Itching, redness that keeps spreading, or a burning feeling can signal skin irritation or an adhesive reaction. Peel it off slowly, use warm soapy water if needed, and tell your therapist so they can adjust tape type, placement, or skip taping next time.
